LinkedIn: An Updated Experience Section

If you are one of the 10,000+ annual visitors to my blog (since I started grad school, this number has dropped considerably as I let blogging slip off the priority list), you may have read my Introvert Bucket List (click here for an example).  It will come as little surprise to many, that I am an introvert (this is a fact for the history books!).

As I (too) quickly move in to the second half of my Master of Human Kinetics, Sport Management degree at the University of Windsor, I am slowly gearing up for the post-education career search.  To prepare for this search, I spent a few hours updating my LinkedIn profile.  As I was updating my profile, I decided to add an Introvert Experience section – a different type of experience from what many post to their LinkedIn profiles (e.g., careers, volunteer work).

Introvert Experience

I added an Introvert part to my LinkedIn profile for several reasons.  Firstly, I am an introvert.  Secondly, to illustrate to readers of my LinkedIn profile that stereotypes are not always a true representation of an individual (as an introvert, I have still managed to speak in front of a crowd of 3,000+ people…twice!).  Thirdly, as I work in two of the most introvert-phobic sectors of North American society (Academia and the sports industry), I wanted my experiences to be an example not to allow preconceived perceptions of a dream employer/industry to stop individuals from striving to work in said industry/organization (e.g., if you want to be a touring workshop facilitator, but have been told that you are not outgoing enough, don’t let these naysayers dictate you). Fourthly, as a means to spark conversation about the benefits of diverse workplaces – what is the fun of an office if all of your colleagues are extroverts and just like you? Lastly, as an opportunity for prospective employers and colleagues to better understand the person on the other side of the relationship (i.e., me – a prospective future employee).

My LinkedIn Profile

I have had an active LinkedIn profile for several years. To view my profile, and the new updated section, feel free to visit LinkedIn (click here).  Join the network!

Your Call to Action

Take a few minutes, and reflect on if you are an introvert or extrovert.  (A secret, you are likely somewhere in between!) Share your experience by commenting below, or on social media.

A second call to action! Spend some time reviewing my LinkedIn profile, and please let me know if there are suggested edits/changes (spelling, grammar).
