Ontario Government’s Hurting Canada

I give the media a hard time in many of my blog posts (along with corporations and governments). Why? The media is becoming very commercial. The media’s number one job is to tell the truth. When there are less journalists due to large budget cuts, and the owner’s want for higher profits, the stories suffer.
However, some journalists still find time to do great work, even greater work considering the circumstances.
Recently, I read the Ontario Provincial Government will be introducing new career planning programs for elementary and high school students. The thought of this sends shivers up my spine.
Reading this article, I had to think, what has happened? Why are we suddenly solely career focused and focused on getting kids prepared to work?
What about growing up to be happy? Why do we now train our kids to grow up to be a ‘CEO’?
When we ask a child/student, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up’, should the answer not be, ‘I want to be happy’. Happy versus, ‘I want to be a boss’?
I would much rather have happiness be the be all to end all, versus a career. A career we must select at the age of five?
Or, why not help children discover their values and research organizations with similar values. Instead of growing up to be a businessman/doctor/etc, have them grow up wanting to work for Apple (as an example) or Amnesty International because the values of these organizations match their personal values, or values of their family.
A Call To Action
The next time you are speaking with a child or student, instead ask them, ‘What organization, if you could work for any in the world, would you want to work for’? The answer may surprise you.
