Sport – one of humanity’s great developments. A social and culutral hub in many areas of the world.
Sport participation has many benefits to individuals and communities. From the health side of things, indiviudals gain the phyiscal activity-related benefits from participating in sport (weight/mass, strong cardiorespiratory system, fat mass control, etc). Socially, frienships and bonds are formed. Psychologically, sport is a great stree reliever and can teach resilience in participants. Spiritually, sport can connect one with a higher purpose (playing for the good of the team versus. self).
However, many around the world, including even in the Okanagan, do not have the opportunitity to participate in sport. Parents may not have the direct financial means to finance sport participation for their parents. Rural dwellers may live too far from others and thus have limited access to sporting opportunities. Those with disabilities may not have the community to support their participation. Aboriginal peoples have had their traditional sporting culutre stripped by federal government policies (or lack thereof).
Okanagan Elite Athlete’s sport4one program aims to find ways to provide the opportunity for each and every of the world’s 7 billion individuals to participate in sport, if they so choose. sport4one is committed to being individualized to each community/culture/population. The program understands and allows for diversity to shine through when implementing new sport programs. Over the next 20-30 years, initiatives and programs will be started and implemented to bring sport to all.
One fantastic organization working across Canada is KidSport. KidSport provides grants to families to allow their children to participate in sport. KidSport will cover the registration fees for children and teens registering with local sporting leagues and organizations. This is one organization who is helping bring ‘sport to all’.
