A Research Thesis

A Friendly Note
To all my friends in the human kinetics/kinesiology/healthy living field, a question. Possibly even a masters thesis question.
Is the decrease in physical activity amongst university students related to their increased issues with coping with stress and adversity?
A Bit of Science
The hormone cortisol, released by the body during stressful times, can have massive impact on the body’s functioning and homeostasis. It can stall neurogenisis – the strengthening and development of neural connections. Without neurogensis, learning, at the neural level, cannot take place. Learning academic material cannot take place. Learning how to cope and deal with adversity, and learning from difficult life experiences cannot take place. Physical activity is a proven and excellent way to relief stress during stressful times, and will slow the release of cortisol.
For many, during physical activity, one can be in a zen zone. This can be one’s ‘alone’ time. Time to reflect on choices, behaviours, values, thoughts, ideas, to-do lists, and life. With no time to go freely into one’s thoughts, this can lead to uncharacteristically bad reactions to adversity, regardless of size or significance.
My Call To Action
I won’t dwell too much further into some of the background. As many university students are future business leaders, activists, social change leaders, and tomorrow’s supervisors and managers, we must ensure they leave university with positive and healthy habits to ensure they are set up for success throughout their lives.
