On May 14, 2013, I urge you, if eligible, to vote in the B.C. Provincial election!
During December 2012, I had the great privilege to be a Canadian in Egypt during its constitution referendum (<a href="http://visit summary“>blog post). Rounding a massive sand hill in the desert on the back of the camel to have the three great pyramids appear on the horizon was magical.
I was not prepared to see the pyramids in person. Neither was I prepared to see men walking from the rural areas just outside Cairo to cast their ballot in the referendum on their constitution.
The series of events i witnessed in voting day will never been seen in a BC election (click here).
On the day of the voting, Egyptians lined up for hours at polling stations. Before this date many brothers and sons, fathers and husbands died. Blood was shed to allow a son’s mother to vote. For a father’s daughters right to help elect their country’s leader.
The simple act
On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, take a few minutes before work, during your lunch break, or after work to vote. Billions of our fellow human brothers and sisters have no idea what it means to vote for their political leader. Millions more walk a few hours/days to travel to voting centres, and wait in line for 5-6 hours to cast a ballot.
Many of us have 3-6 candidates to select from. Many elections in countries just having heir first democratic vote, have 2.
Voting is one of the free world’s sacred acts. All we do is mark a tiny x in a box on a piece of paper. With freedom comes this responsibility to be an active citizen.
On May 14, 2013, and every few years after that, vote!
