Anyone running an organization should consider having a Twitter account. It’s a very effective tool for telling your organization’s story, communicating news to your audience, and listening to your customers.
How to get the best bang for your Tweet
How do you get the best bang for your tweet? The most re-tweets, and favourites, etc. There’s no magic word, time of day, or begging your personal network.
I recently read an article that said brands have most engagement on Twitter during weekends. The next stat was that many brands aren’t tweeting on weekends.
The article concludes that you need to always find a way to break through the “noise” on social media. Someone follows 500 people, so how can you make what you post be heard amongst 500 people.
I think the author answers his on question in his article without realizing it. Why is engagement so much higher on weekends? There’s less noise because less brands, or your competition, is posting. (Also, possibly, because more people are not working and have time to play on social media. Also, many sporting events take place on weekends so Twitter may “explode” with fans updating the world with instant stats and results.)
It’s like having a conversation with someone in bar compared to in a garden. Less noise. Less distractions. It’s a one-on-one conversation.
Social Media Experts
At one3ag, we tend to be cautious of the “experts.” They are very well intentioned, but miss the mark. Whenever reading an article named “The Twitter Bible,” read the article even more critically. Think about what the author is saying with an open mind ready for learning. Remember, though, experts screw up on a regular basis.
It’s great someone is recording the data on Twitter engagement. Data is only as good as the numbers. It can be mis-interpreted, mis-communicated, mis-represented. Collection is only the first part of the battle.
The key to being successful on social media is listening. One social media strategy will not necessarily work for a different organization. One size does not fit all.
For a few weeks, track the times and topics of your Twitter posts. What day of the week, hour of the day, or type of content does your audience most engage with and share with their networks?
